Over 40% of Shampoos Contain Harmful Chemicals—Switch to Natural Hair Care

2024年8月9日

The world of hair care is undergoing a significant transformation, as awareness grows about the potential harsh and harmful ingredients found in conventional hair care products, a significant shift towards natural alternatives is taking place. This movement isn't just a trend; it's a response to the growing demand for products that not only care for our hair and wellbeing but also respect the environment.

Why Go With Natural Hair Care?

The move to natural hair care products is not just a trend; it's a response to the growing concerns over the long-term effects of conventional hair care that often contain harsh chemicals. Sulfates, silicones, siloxanes, polyquaterniums, and acrylates are commonly found in many hair care products. These ingredients may provide immediate results, such as foaming action or smoothness, but they can also lead to scalp irritation, weakened hair, and environmental damage over time.

Sulfates, for instance, are known to strip the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness, itchiness, and flakiness. They can also contribute to a loss of hair density. Silicones and other similar compounds are not easily biodegradable, resulting in build-up that can suffocate the scalp and weigh down the hair. As consumers become more conscious of these issues, they are turning to natural hair care solutions that promote both personal health and ecological sustainability.

Over 40% of Shampoos Found with Harmful Chemicals

A recent investigation by the Danish Consumer Council THINK Chemicals uncovered potentially harmful chemicals in over 40% of shampoos. The study analysed 72 shampoos from brands like Maui, The Body Shop, L’Oreal, and Redken, ranking them based on their chemical content. Shockingly, 30 products received the lowest ‘C-rating’ due to the presence of suspected endocrine disruptors, allergens, and environmentally harmful chemicals.

Over half of the shampoos contained perfumes, which can hide harmful chemicals not legally required to be listed. Limiting products with perfumes can reduce exposure to these chemicals. Alarmingly, one shampoo (Living Proof Curl Shampoo) contained a PFAS ‘forever chemical,’ known for its persistence and bioaccumulation, raising significant health and environmental concerns.

The good news is that 24 products were free from concerning chemicals, highlighting the availability of safer alternatives. The study emphasises the need for robust legislation to phase out harmful chemicals from consumer products by 2030. Testing Reveals 1 in 7 Dry Shampoos Contain Benzene

A recent investigation by the US-based Valisure lab revealed alarming levels of benzene, a known carcinogen, in some popular dry shampoos. Their results showed that one in seven tested products contained "high levels" of this harmful chemical. Notably, Batiste, marketed as “Australia’s no.1 dry shampoo brand,” was among those named. With three cans sold every second worldwide, consumers were outraged, leading to a $2.5 million class action settlement.

Dry shampoo, a go-to for many seeking a quick fix for dirty and oily hair, is facing serious scrutiny. Major brands like Unilever and Procter & Gamble have issued recalls after discovering benzene—a dangerous chemical found in petrol and cigarette smoke—in their products.

Benzene, linked to increased risks of blood cancers such as leukemia, has raised alarms. While Australian regulations restrict benzene in sunscreen, cosmetics remain largely unregulated, with some dry shampoos exceeding safe limits by over ten times (2).

Given these findings, it's crucial to reconsider the use of dry shampoos and explore safer alternatives for maintaining hair health.

The Evolution of Natural Hair Care & Wellness

In the past, natural hair care products faced criticism for their performance. Complaints ranged from a lack of lather to hair feeling unclean or hair feeling to oilly from the essential oils in the product. However, the natural hair care industry has listened and evolved. Innovations in green chemistry have led to the development of natural shampoos and conditioners that offer the same, if not better, results without the negative side effects.

The Latest Green-science Innovations in Hair Care

The natural hair care industry has seen a surge in green innovations, addressing past concerns about the effectiveness of natural hair care products. Brands like NUORI have made strides in replacing synthetic conditioning agents and sulfates with natural alternatives that do not compromise on performance.

Recent advancements in the field have introduced a range of innovative ingredients and formulations that cater to the needs of health-conscious consumers. Ingredients such as Cica (centella asiatica), known for its smoothing and anti-inflammatory properties, are making their way into hair care products. Prebiotics and probiotics are being used to create a healthier scalp environment, while vitamins sourced from reputable suppliers like DSM-Firmenich, including niacinamide (vitamin B3), support overall hair health and moisture retention.

Moreover, proteins such as quinoa are being utilised for their amino acids, which can strengthen and repair hair. These developments reflect a broader trend towards the 'skinification' of hair care, where the focus is not only on the hair itself but also on the health of the scalp.

Do Hair and Nail Supplements Actually Work?

Just like our skin, the quality and thickness of our hair are also representative of our diet. Hair and nail supplements have come under the microscope for their effectiveness or lack of evidence, and many contain fillers or synthetics. However, one supplement stands out: IMBIBE Miracle Collagen. Free from fillers and synthetics, clinically proven to work, it's not only amazing for your skin and cellulite but also for growing and strengthening your hair.

And what's a perfect hair routine without a boar bristle brush? It's not just a tool; it's a ritual. With each stroke, it massages the scalp, stimulates blood flow, and spreads natural oils along each strand. It's a practice that connects us to a time when hair care was about self-care and environmental consciousness.

Remember, what you use on your hair can seep into your skin through your scalp, so choosing the right hair care is just as important as your skincare.
